A silver or bonded filling can restore a tooth that has a minor chip, crack, or cavity. But what happens if it's something major? A crown is then in order.

A crown is a dental restoration that strengthens and surrounds the entire tooth. Like a hard hat. a filling goes inside the tooth. But if the tooth's shell cracks or is damaged by decay, there's no shell left to hold the filling. This is where a crown is needed, to surround and protect the entire tooth.

Crowns can be made of different materials such as porcelain, porcelain and metal, and gold. At Akron Dental Concepts, we restore most front teeth with gorgeous all-porcelain crowns. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. For back teeth, we usually use porcelain fused to metal crowns. These crowns have the strength of metal but the look of tooth-colored porcelain.
